African Geomancy with Cathryn Macnaughton

January 11th 2009

Launching our programme of events for 2009, a sizeable audience enjoyed a fascinating account of African geomancy by TVD member Cathryn McNaughton.  Having had no previous inclination towards an interest in such African traditions, Cathryn felt herself drawn to study their geomancy and has gained privileged access to its practitioners.  She introduced us to this orally transmitted knowledge which had been shared with her by Credo Mutwa, a Zulu High Shaman.  In this tradition, valuing the Earth and the ancestors is over-arching.  The practitioners of building and sacred space design are also highly regarded: such people are viewed as being ‘very close to God’s hand’.

Cathryn also drew attention to the comparisons with other global geomantic traditions, such as feng shui, and Australian aboriginal and Celtic practices.  We were also told of the Golden Nile Meridian ley line that runs down the east of Africa.  As this area of the world is acknowledged to be the crucible of mankind, this talk gave us a valuable insight into a culture that can deepen our understanding of key beliefs around space and place that are shared globally.
