Taplow Court

We enjoyed a sun-drenched afternoon at Taplow Court outside Maidenhead on 15 June for which our leader, Deirdre Edwards, had undertaken  her  usual  meticulous preparation.    We   learnt   of   the excavations  of  Taeppa’s  mound in 1883  which  yielded the richest finds of Anglo-Saxon grave goods until  the  Sutton  Hoo  treasures were discovered. Energy and water lines were traced around this    substantial    burial   mound.

We  paused  to  acknowledge  the

fundamental importance  of  water in our lives and were delighted with the tranquil Bapsey Pond used by St Birinus during his conversions in the 7th century. We heard too about the Grenfells who built the present mansion, seeing the monument to two sons both killed within a few weeks on the Western Front in 1915. Lastly, we trod the fine Cedar Walk reputed to have been first planted by Princess Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen.  The helicopter flight overhead of President Bush en route to Windsor Castle lent a certain extra piquancy to this memorable occasion.
